Star Publications Bhd

Print and Beyond

After 29 years at The Star, including a stint of five years as Group Chief Editor, Wong Chun Wai moved up into the corporate arena on November 2013 when he was appointed Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Star Publications (M) Bhd. Emulating the example of Steven Tan, a former business reporter who successfully helmed the company for two decades, Wong aims to leverage his passion for, and in-depth insider’s knowledge of, the media industry to take The Star to new heights.

"Digital and social media components are vital to the integrated media platform that we actively advocate. In the coming years, digital and social media will become even more important. We want to tie these with our print. (…) [For now] the money is still in print in Malaysia. In short, print is still relevant." - Wong Chun Wai, Group Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Star Publications Bhd

Digital Media Asia 2014

Driving Innovation in News Media

Taking digital revenues to the next level is a common goal for all media companies. But how are the most successful publishers focusing their efforts? Forward-thinking media professionals from Asia and around the world will gather in Singapore from 18-21 November for Digital Media Asia and share insights, strategies and best practices from their most innovative new media ventures.

Since its launch in 2009, Digital Media Asia (DMA) has grown to become Asia’s largest digital conference dedicated to the news publishing industry. The event offers four focussed days of conference sessions and dedicated masterclasses tackling issues such as content monetisation, online video and digital journalism. It will also host the second Opennews.hack Asia hackathon, a Services & Solutions Expo and the presentation of the 5th Asian Digital Media Awards.

The next big wave

Newspapers already successfully faced “new modes of circulating intelligence” in the past. They overcame the gloomy prediction of James Gordon Bennett, the editor of the New York Herald who predicted in 1845 that the telegraph - the disruptive tech of the time – would put many newspapers out of business. While newspapers are constantly predicted to die, they are actually enjoying the largest audiences ever, continue to play a critical role in our communities, remain a good investment and can still address the many challenges of hyper-connected societies by pooling intelligence from its network of peers.

Who should own the news?

Around the world, there are as many business models as there are markets. In some countries private ownership is a legal requirement. Others are dominated by companies owned by public corporations that are only in it for the cash. Then there are passionate family businesses, newspapers owned by interest groups, such as trade unions, students, even the church, god forbid. There are trusts that guarantee editorial independence within a broader framework, such as The Guardian and Irish Times. Of course in some parts of the world the media are owned, and controlled by state.
