Summary
The evolution of mass-produced desktop computers from "toys" to powerful workstations is now resulting in a limited number of generally accepted platforms. We define a platform as a standardised foundation which consists of computer-specific parts such as the central processor and the operating system software. Today’s main competing standard platforms are IBM PS/2s, clones of the IBM PC-family, Apple Macintoshes and Unix workstations.
